What is a 3D printing filament?

A 3D printing filament is the raw material used in Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) or Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF) 3D printers to create three-dimensional objects. Think of it as the "ink" of 3D printing.

Physical Form and Structure

3D printing filaments typically comes as a continuous plastic wire wound on a spool, similar to thread or fishing line but much thicker. The standard diameters are:

  • 1.75mm (most common)
  • 2.85mm (also called 3mm)

How It Works

The printing process works like this:

  1. The filament is fed from the spool into the printer's extruder
  2. The extruder heats the filament to its melting point
  3. The molten plastic is pushed through a small nozzle
  4. The printer deposits this melted material layer by layer to build up the final object
  5. Each layer cools and solidifies, bonding with the previous layer

Common Types of Filaments

Basic Materials:

  • PLA (Polylactic Acid) - Easy to use, biodegradable, good for beginners
  • ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) - Stronger and more heat-resistant
  • PETG ( Polyethylene Terephthalate Glycol) - Chemical resistant with good clarity
  • TPU ( Thermoplastic Polyurethane) - Flexible rubber-like material

Specialty Filaments:

  • Wood-filled - Contains real wood particles
  • Metal-filled - Contains metal powders for weight and appearance
  • Carbon fiber - Reinforced for strength
  • Glow-in-the-dark - Phosphorescent additives
  • Conductive - Can conduct electricity

Key Properties

When choosing a filament, consider:

  • Melting temperature - How hot it needs to get
  • Bed adhesion - How well it sticks to the print surface
  • Strength and flexibility - Mechanical properties of the finished part
  • Ease of printing - How forgiving it is for beginners
  • Post-processing - Whether it can be sanded, painted, or chemically smoothed

The choice of filament depends on your specific project requirements, printer capabilities, and experience level. PLA remains the most popular choice for beginners due to its ease of use and minimal odor during printing.
